Top Five Reveals from the “Encyclopaedia Eorzea” Lore Book

Encyclopaedia eorzea volume 2 pdf

Copies of the much anticipated “Encyclopaedia Eorzea” lore book have been slowly trickling their way into players’ hands, whether to the lucky few who snagged one at FanFest Las Vegas, or to those who have since ordered it online (from Square Enix, we hope, not from eBay). Even with its release as yet relatively limited, through those generous enough to post scans and photographs online, the effect on the FFXIV lore and RP communities has been monumental — as we discussed previously on Episode 10.

If you have yet to receive your copy, or even if you have yet to complete your read-through of the entire mammoth tome, we at MuseCast have compiled what we believe are the biggest — though not always the best — must-know facts for every Eorzea enthusiast.

1) Yda’s backstory is a huge tease for Stormblood

The whole “is it Yda or is it Yda’s sister” speculation surrounding the Stormblood trailer isn’t just pulled out of our asses; we oh-so-coincidentally found out that our favorite masked pugilist left Ala Mhigo and arrived in Sharlayan with a sibling the same day the trailer was first shown. Nor do I think the fact is thrown around randomly — no other profile in the book casually mentions a key character having a sibling, then notably refrains from giving any further details about them. The technical term for that is “a f***ing tease.“

Where, we now wonder, is the sister now? Did she join Yda in studying in Sharlayan, or venture elsewhere? How does this overlap with their father being a Resistance member in Little Ala Mhigo when Yda was young (but not so young that she couldn’t volunteer for missions)? Or does it not overlap at all — did the sisters look similar enough that one could pose in place of the other? With so much left unanswered, it seems nearly guaranteed that this mysterious sister will be making an appearance in 4.0, and quite possible she will be at least discussed as early as 3.5. Combine this with the Yda-related reveals of patch 3.4, and we have the makings of some serious hype.

2) Widargelt is a lost prince of Ala Mhigo

Speaking of Stormblood hype, all you Monks out there will remember Widargelt, a stoic and single-minded member of the Fist of Rhalgr and the Ala Mhigan Resistance, who played off the learned yet patronizing scholar Erik. When it was revealed way back that there was a surviving member of the Ala Mhigan royal family, a nephew called Theodred, speculation abound as to where he might be found. Turns out, he was hiding in plain sight over in the Monk questline under a different name.

My feeling is that Widargelt will be integrated into the story in the same way that Estinien was in Patch 2.5, being pulled in from job-quest obscurity to main-scenario relevance. Hopefully, this will also include further character development beyond simply being seen as a one-dimensional, serious-business fighter dude. Questions also remain as to what role this royal heritage will play in the story. Is the Resistance entirely interested in re-installing a monarchy in their theoretically liberated homeland, or is there internal disagreement on the matter? Is Widardgelt interested in taking on such a role, or would he rather stick to being a Monk? With such fragmented information going around about the events surrounding the invasion, will there be questioning of his true heritage, or other royal pretenders coming out of the woodworks? Think on it, listeners — only 8-ish months to go until Stormblood!

3) Keeper of the Moon names are a bit of a mess

Here’s one bit of information that sadly, cannot be considered progress. The book contains detailed synopses on the origins and general characteristics of Hydaelyn’s six spoken races, including of course, naming conventions. Most of this should have been clarification or re-statement of what we already know, since naming conventions have been long revealed and well established.

Not so, apparently, when it comes to Miqo’te Keepers of the Moon. The above example would have us believe that a hypothetical female Keeper named Ohki Nbolo has the given name Nbolo, a mother with the given name Ohki, and no family name whatsoever. This outright contradicts what’s been previously stated on the Lore forum. In the “original” naming convention, Ohki Nbolo instead has the given name Ohki and the family name Nbolo. If she had a brother, and their mother’s name was Ohjo Nbolo, he’d be called Ohjo’a (Or Ohjo’to, etc.) Nbolo.

“…T
he Keepers of the Moon is a highly matriarchal society, with family names passed down from the mother, not the father. It is said that some of these surnames have survived since the First Astral Era.“
In addition to taking the mother’s surname, males also take the mother’s forename, adding a suffix (separated by an apostrophe) to the end to designate the order in which they were born.“

This “new” convention, as stated in the lore book, might work out for females as explained therein, but devolves into complete nonsense when we consider male names. Ohki Nbolo’s oldest brother would be called Ohki’a — but why would a matriarchal culture create more elaborate and specific names for males than females? And without Keeper family names, what would Ohki’a’s second name be, exactly? The whole idea here was that the males had no given names, denoting their lower status.

Our bet is that this particular contradiction is, unfortunately, an oversight or miscommunication on Square Enix’s part, and will be retconned to its original state. The issue has already been brought up on the Lore book errata thread, so my fellow Mooncat players and I will be waiting patiently for our identity crisis to be resolved.

4) Nael Van Darnus was female all along

Back in the day, failing anything else to do while laying on the ground waiting for a Raise in Turn 9, you too might have wondered about some of the theories as to why the ostensibly male Garlean Legatus of the VIIth Legion and 1.0 antagonist Nael Van Darnus was revived with a more feminine form in the Second Coil of Bahamut, as Nael Deus Darnus. As bringing dead folks back into the corporeal realm from the aetherial via Dalamud mind control is an imperfect science, this form may have belonged to someone important to Nael, to a slain foe saved in the memories of Bradamante, or perhaps just it was just what Bahamut felt like coming up with the day you stepped into the Coil.

Encyclopaedia Eorzea Volume 3

The true story turned out a lot more interesting than any of the theories. The person inside the White Raven’s armor was female all along — Eula Darnus, posing as her brother Nael after his death. Not only did she manage to successfully run the con all the way to the very end, but also turned up the crazy by at least a factor of 1000 when she came into power, bringing Garlemald victory after victory through the merciless slaughter of her opposition. One has to wonder, truly, how prevalent identity theft really is among Garlean officers with armor designs such as these.

5) Eorzea has its own Zodiac

If you are interested in using astrology in your character development, the newly-clarified information about the Eorzean zodiac can be a fun addition. More specifically, each of the Twelve has ties to the different moons (months) of the year. Though one’s patron diety is largely cultural or societal, a zodiac sign may actually say more about your character’s individual personality. Was their birth in the month of Halone to blame for their righteous temper? Or did their birth in the month of Byregot gift them with their amazing crafting skills? Might being born under Nald’thal confer an affinity for playing the market board, or Nymeia superior luck at the Gold Saucer? Furthermore, might the movement of celestial bodies affect their day-to-day lives?

The concept of a star sign based on birth month is not entirely new – the 2016 Valentione’s Day quest involved fortune tellers portending your future romanic prospects partially using your character’s sign (according to the birthdate you set when creating your character). However, unless you happened to have twelve alts sitting around all with different birth months to test it on, it was difficult to discern all the details of which sign went where. Now that this information is organized and compiled, we are free to use our horoscopes to better know our characters’ present and future — unless, of course, they choose to instead make their own destiny instead.

Bonus - Allagan Tomestones

Ever since the days of Myth gear, tomestones have been the greatest object of our desire — and of our never-ending grinding. We have known for some time that the in-universe explanation for these treasures is that they are storage devices containing information on one of a wide variety of scholarly subjects studied and written about by the ancient Allagans. They are, essentially, Allagan hard drives. How very lore- appropriate, then, to find an actual USB hard drive in the design of a Tomestone of Poetics in our FanFest loot bags!

As for exactly what information might be stored on them, it’s hard to tell, since so often they’re just traded away. Now that we have a reference for the size of these things, it’s funny to think about our characters carrying a sack containing hundreds of them to Mor Dhona, tossing it on the counter, and shouting, “One coat, please!”
