A Web proxy client is a client application or computer thatsends requests to the TCPport on which Forefront TMG listens for outgoing Web requests fromthe network in which the client computer resides. By default,Forefront TMG listens for outgoing Web requests from clients in theInternal network on port 8080. Web proxy clients are typicallyWeb browserapplications that comply with HTTP 1.1 and are configured tosend Web requests to a Forefront TMG computer. Each Web browser isconfigured through its own user interface or obtains itsconfiguration settings from another server.

When a user specifies the HTTPprotocol or does not specify any protocol in a URLin a a CERN-compliant Web browser, the Web browser sends an HTTPGET request containing the URL to the host and port specified inits configuration settings.

When an HTTP GET request reaches a Forefront TMG computer on thelistening port, the MicrosoftFirewall service checks the access rules that apply to thepredefined HTTP protocol definition (port 80), which isassociated with the Web Proxy Filter (the Forefront TMG Web proxy),to determine whether a request may be sent from the source to thedestination host (the Web server). During this check, the Firewallservice performs any required forward DNS nameresolution to determine whether a rule applies to the request. Ifthe request passes this check, the Firewall service passes therequest to the Web proxy, which forwards the request to the portspecified in the URL or to port 80 (the default port) on theWeb server. Note that the Forefront TMG policy does not limit theports to which the Web proxy may forward requests.

Forefront TMG can perform application-layer filtering and cacheresponses for HTTP requests from Web proxy clients.

When a user specifies the HTTPS protocol (HTTP over SSL) in aURL in a CERN-compliant Web browser, the Web browser sends thefollowing HTTP CONNECT request.

When the CONNECT request reaches the Forefront TMG computer onthe listening port, the Firewall service checks the rules todetermine whether a request may be sent from the source to thedestination using the HTTP protocol. If the request passes therules check, the Firewall service forwards the request to the Webproxy, and the Web proxy determines whether the port specified inthe CONNECT request is included in a tunnel port range defined inthe Forefront TMG configuration. If the port number passes thistest, the Web proxy allows the request to be sent to the TCP portspecified on the destination host to open a connection. When thisoperation succeeds, the Forefront TMG computer informs the clientthat the connection has been established. From that point on, theclient sends encrypted packets directly to the destination on theport specified in the CONNECT request without any mediation by theWeb proxy.

Note that Web proxy clients can run on Firewall client computersand on SecureNAT client computers.

SettingsDefined for Web Proxy Clients

If the default Internal network or a user-defined network isconfigured to support Web proxy clients (the EnableWebProxyClientsproperty of its FPCNetwork object is set toTrue), Forefront TMG will listen for connection requestsfrom Web proxy clients in that network. The FPCWebListenerPropertiesobject, which can be accessed through the WebListenerPropertiesof the network object, contains the Web listener properties foroutgoing requests from the applicable network.

Web proxy clients can download an automatic configuration script(Wpad.dat for Web browsers running on computers without FirewallClient installed and Wspad.dat for Web browsers running on Firewallclient computers) from a Forefront TMG computer. The contents ofthe default automatic configuration script are defined byproperties of the FPCClientAutoScriptobject, which can be accessed through the AutoScriptproperty of the FPCWebBrowserClientConfigobject for the network. For example, properties of this objectspecify whether Web browsers configured to use the defaultautomatic configuration script will bypass the Web proxy forrequests sent to non-dotted names, specified domain names, anddestinations in specified ranges of IP addresses.

WebProxy Clients Running on Firewall Client Computers

On Firewall client computers, the Firewall Client software canconfigure some settings of the Web browsers running on them usinginformation provided by a Forefront TMG computer. These settingscan be obtained using Web Proxy Automatic Discovery (WPAD) toautomatically discover the location of the server from which theautomatic configuration script Wspad.dat can be downloaded, orautomatic configuration can be disabled altogether. You canconfigure the following properties for Web browsers running onFirewall client computers:

• The Forefront TMG computer and port to which the client shouldconnect.
• WPAD settings.
• The computers that a Web browser should access directly.
• Backup route, if the Forefront TMG computer isunavailable.
• Information for creating the automatic configuration scriptthat can be executed by a Web browser every time that the Webbrowser sends a request for a URL.

If the automatic configuration of Web browsers running onFirewall client computers is enabled, Web browsers are configuredwith these settings when the Firewall Client software is installed,and they are updated each time that Firewall Client is restarted,each time that Detect Now or Test Server is clickedon the Settings tab or Configure Now is clicked onthe Web Browser tab in the Microsoft Firewall Client forForefront TMG dialog box, and every six hours after the previousrefresh.

If Firewall Client is not installed, the Web browser can beconfigured manually.
